I’m delighted to announce that the first ever Superyacht Scholarships have been awarded, and that four lucky and deserving people have won a superb advantage to break into the yachting industry courtesy of all the wonderful sponsors of this groundbreaking program.
Those who attended the webinar on the 2nd of March heard me give away nearly €20,000 worth of prizes to four worthy winners, including a spectacular jackpot prize of over €6700.
All four scholarship recipients will receive a lot of help from us at The Crew Coach in launching their careers, with a Private Career Accelerator Package offering Ultimate Yachting CV Toolkit, 3 private coaching sessions, our Yachting 101 online course and the How to Get into Luxury Yachting’ guide.
To top it all off, all our winners have also been assigned a personal yachting mentor to advise and guide them through their first year of their luxury yachting career. It’s enough to make me wish that this scholarship was around when I was getting into yachting!
I really want to thank absolutely everybody who participated in this groundbreaking competition- I was truly amazed at the high standard and enthusiasm of the hundreds of applicants. I read each application personally, and I feel like I know you all a little bit already! I’m convinced from the quality of your applications that the yachting industry is very lucky to have such a keen and willing bunch of young people entering the ranks.
In the Interior Department, Australian Zhara Bathe won a prestigious 5-day Introduction to Yachting Course, kindly donated by Interior Yacht Services. Zhara will also benefit from red carpet treatment from Quay Crew to help find her first job.
James Benning from the UK was the lucky winner in the Deck Department, with a bundle of entry level deck courses provided by our friends at Zephyr Yachting. The expert team at Camper & Nicholsons International Crew Placement will be on hand to help James secure his first Junior Deckhand position.
Meanwhile, fellow Englishman Matthew Hold took out the Chef’s Department scholarship, landing the fantastic Ship’s Cook and Food Hygiene courses from training school Secrets de Cuisine. Matthew will be in the very capable hands of the Amandine Cuisine crew agency to hunt for his first chef job onboard.
Rounding out the department prizes, South African Trystan Irwin took out the scholarship for aspiring yacht engineers, receiving 5 day Approved Engineering Certificate course from Warsash Superyacht Academy. Trystan will receive the VIP treatment from YPI Crew in his job-search.
All winners took home an incredible package of prizes that will help launch their yachting career from Antibes, including a week’s free crew accommodation from The Glamorgan, The Crew Grapevine, Debbie’s Crew House or The Crew House– as well as €100 euro worth of free yachting uniform from Deckers Uniform to ensure they’re well-dressed for dockwalking and interviews.
All winners will also benefit from financial advice, an offshore bank account and a year’s free travel insurance from Horizons, as well as preferred currency exchange rates, financial planning report and a discounted investment scheme for life. The Professional Yachting Association will provide a year’s membership and an essential Seaman’s Discharge Book.
Zhara Bathe was also the recipient of the extraordinary jackpot prize of €6700, taking her total prize winnings to a value of over €9,000! The jackpot prize included the 5-day STCW 95 Basic Training Course from the training experts at Bluewater Yachting, a return flight up to €1,500 from her home town to Nice from yachting specialists Blue Marine Travel, a professional profile photo from the sensational Naneen Photography, and a pair of designer sunglasses from the favourite sunglass supplier of the yachting industry: Crew Eyewear.

Finally, there were some brilliant spot prizes given away during the Webinar, including great prizes donated by Interior Yacht Services, Blue Marine Travel, and The Crew Coach.
For all those who missed out on the prizes, I want to say congratulations for putting yourself in the game and making the effort right from day one of your yachting career. We wish we could have given scholarships to all of you! With such a busy yachting season shaping up ahead your future looks bright, and I look forward to meeting many of you as you come to Antibes and launch your job search. I will be hosting a series of free talks in Antibes from the 25th March to the 13th May every Friday at 2pm in Antibes – see here for further information! Make sure you read our past blogs to learn top tips about CV-writing, dockwalking and interview techniques- and those who are interested in a further boost to your career chances, check out our Break In Track for ideas about how to get ahead of the game.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the businesses who donated their time, money and expertise to making this scholarship program a success. I was overjoyed at the enthusiasm and generosity of those companies who reached out to offer a helping hand to the next generation of yacht crew and you can read all about our sponsors here on www.superyachtscholarship.com.
Here’s to running many more scholarship programs in the future: personally I can’t wait to do it all again next year and give the next batch of aspiring crew the wonderful head-start into yachting they so richly deserve!
