Personal Statement

Before joining the yachting industry, I worked as diesel mechanic, fabricator & welder for 8 years, which has enabled me to adapt extremely well to this industry. I have been trusted to complete tasks that usually contractors would do, and surprised captains and other engineers on my willingness to get stuck in and get the job done to the highest possible standard. The industry has really caught hold of me, and I have a real urge to work my way up. Before progressing to the yachting industry, I have worked land based as a qualified Heavy Diesel Engineer & Plant Mechanic for 7+ years. I have extensive experience working within all aspects of engine repair and routine maintenance. I have primarily been working on CAT, Cummins, MAN, JCB & MTU engines so know them in and out. Within the trade, I have also learnt to weld and fabricate to a to a very high standard, as-well as spraying, joinery & understanding hydraulic systems. With my experience as a HGV and Plant fitter, I am extremely competent with diagnostic equipment & using my knowledge to diagnose all aspects of mechanical and electrical faults. I know exactly what is expected of me & am not afraid to get stuck in; I don’t shy from a challenge, and I know that with this comes long and sometimes in-sociable hours. I pride myself on being a very loyal person; easy to approach, very cheerful and friendly. I am confident & patient enough to take lead and work independently, but also absolutely love learning & have the utmost respect for seniors.

Experience

Sole Engineer

I was solely responsible for the entire yacht- repairing all defects & faults, maintaining the engine room, running daily pumping systems & water maker, as well as maintaining the exterior of the boat to the highest standard. I know the inside and out of all the systems on board, have learnt a lot about the boat electronics, and are extremely confidant with the modern pump and hydraulic system on board.

Sole Engineer

M/Y Victoria Victoria is a new build Navetta 28. I joined the yacht while it was in the build process, therefore it was my sole responsibility to completely set up the engine room. I spent weeks planning the maintenance schedules, purchasing every tool needed, and fully understanding the boats running system & AV system. I was very proud of how I set up the engine room, and got praise from the surveyor and shipyard manager. Unfortunately, upon delivery to the owner of the yacht - after a 5 day crossing of which I took shared responsibility with the captain of watch keeping - the owner decided he wanted to run the yacht without a sole engineer.

Temporary 2nd Engineer

I joined the M/Y Helios 2 in Genoa before crossing the Atlantic over to Florida. During the crossing, I worked the night engine watch, carrying out various tasks to get ready for the yard period. Upon arriving to Florida, M/Y Helios 2 is having major work, so I assisted with all aspects until my temporary contract was over.

2nd Engineer

From the first week I was on board Herculina, Id quickly adapted to the new environment; systems that I haven’t worked around before, & strict working regulations. As the chief engineer was always very occupied with admin (everything we did had to go through the owner with quotes etc.) I was responsible for most of the ‘fixes’ on board, along with the general upkeep & maintenance of all aspects. The chief was also very keen on keeping the engine room absolutely spotless & pristinely painted at all times, so that was also down to me. During the summer, there was 2 chiefs; so to acquire knowledge from both of them has helped me so much develop as a yacht engineer. However, my personal background of older systems really came into play on board due to the age of Herculina, and that enabled me to work closely with the chiefs to problem solve together using all of our combined knowledge. I loved my working environment on board, I have utter respect for the chiefs I worked with, and we made an extremely good team. They both said I was the best second they had ever had – they also entrusted me to step in as acting chief while on courses/holiday, and this has given me a true taste of what it would be like to be chief one day, & that’s a goal I am extremely keen on achieving.
